If the character that mainly defines the myth is remoteness, even if not always necessarily chronological, its fundamental essence consists in hiding, in most cases, behind the narrative fascination, true events. See, for example, one of the best-known myths such as that of Ulysses, behind which is hidden, net of the novel, the colonization of the Mediterranean basin by the Greek polis, precisely Magna Graecia, and which highlights, among other, how often the myth became a vehicle of political propaganda.

The story, known by all, of the ship Argo with fifty heroes on board (53 to be exact) led by Jason who sets sail for Colchis in search of the sacred golden fleece is no exception. But let's start from the beginning. Anche se la vicenda è più complessa e articolata i fatti salienti sono quelli che raccontano di Pelia, usurpatore del regno di Iolco, del quale invece il legittimo erede sarebbe stato suo fratello Esione che fu in aggiunta imprigionato da Pelia insieme a moglie e figli. Esione aveva però un figlio di nome Giasone al quale lo zio promise che avrebbe liberato tutta la sua famiglia se fosse riuscito nell’ impresa di riportare dalla Colchide a Iolco il mitico vello d’oro di cui si favoleggiava in tutta la Grecia. Giasone accettò di tentare la rischiosissima impresa e per far questo, dopo aver armato allo scopo la nave Argo, inviò araldi in tutto il paese per raccogliere l’equipaggio che avrebbe dovuto essere costituito dai più valorosi e coraggiosi. A curiosity: Jason demanded that his cousin Acasto, one of the sons of Pelias, also embark, thus deeming to prevent the imposter king from invoking curses that favored the sinking of the ship. After innumerable vicissitudes and terrible and heroic enterprises, such as the perilous passage of the Hellespont, the landing on the island of Lemnos inhabited by warrior women, the clash with the six-armed giants on the island of Arto and others still, they reached the mouth of the Phasis, on the Black Sea, and from there they pushed inland. Here Jason, with the help of Medea, sorceress and daughter of Aeetes, king of Colchis whom Eros had pushed to fall in love with him, managed to reach the place where the golden fleece was guarded by a dragon immortal. Medea, with her spells, will be able to neutralize the terrible animal finally allowing Jason to take possession of the precious heirloom. The relationship between Jason and Medea will continue and will have a tragic epilogue, but that's another story. Of the heroes, nine will not return because they are dead or missing. Si, ma qual’ è la verità che si cela dietro il mito degli argonauti e del vello d’oro? Qualcosa di molto semplice ed ingegnoso al tempo stesso. E’ ormai appurato dagli archeologi che nella Colchide, terra conosciuta fin dall’antichità per essere ricca di metalli pregiati e che oggigiorno corrisponde alla parte centro occidentale della Georgia, fosse in uso porre nei restringimenti dei ruscelli e nelle anse dei fiumi ricchi d’oro, particolari setacci realizzati con pelli di pecora, in modo che queste, proprio per la loro natura ispida, potessero meglio trattenere le pagliuzze del prezioso metallo.
